Inauguration of Diagnostic and Interventional Pulmonary Medicine Unit at Dr. RMLIMS, Lucknow | Sleep Apnea, Bronchoscopy & Advanced Pulmonary Care
Lucknow: The Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (Dr. RMLIMS), Lucknow, inaugurated its newly constructed “Diagnostic and Interventional Pulmonary Medicine Unit” on 21st September 2024. The event’s chief guest was Professor C.M. Singh, Director of Dr. RMLIMS, accompanied by other dignitaries, including Dr. Pradyumn Singh, Dean, Dr. Jyotsna Agarwal, Registrar, and Dr. Ajay Kumar Singh, Chief Medical Superintendent. Special invited guests included Professor Suryakant, HOD, Respiratory Medicine, KGMU, and Professor Ved Prakash, HOD, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, KGMU.
Expansion of Advanced Pulmonary Facilities
Dr. Hemant Kumar, Head of the Pulmonary Medicine Department, is overseeing this newly inaugurated unit. He highlighted that this unit is equipped with advanced diagnostic tools such as Spirometry, Impulse Oscillometry, Body Plethysmography (Body Box), Sleep Lab, Bronchoscopy Suite, and Thoracoscopy Suite. This center aims to provide early diagnosis and treatment for patients suffering from severe respiratory diseases.
Rising Obesity and Sleep Apnea Concerns
The institute’s Director, Prof. C.M. Singh, emphasized the importance of the Sleep Lab. He noted, “With increasing obesity, snoring has become a common issue among overweight individuals. However, snoring can be a sign of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which, if left untreated, can lead to serious health problems such as heart attacks, Resistant Hypertension, and Uncontrolled Diabetes.”
Professor Ved Prakash also emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and treatment for OSA and other pulmonary diseases, particularly through the use of advanced technologies like bronchoscopy.
Role of Bronchoscopy and Thoracoscopy in Diagnosing Cancer and TB
Dr. Hemant Kumar highlighted the critical role of bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy in diagnosing lung cancer and tuberculosis. He said, “Over 80% of lung cancer patients exhibit TB-like symptoms, leading to delays in diagnosis. With bronchoscopy, early-stage lung cancer can be identified.” Similarly, thoracoscopy plays a crucial role in diagnosing Pleural Effusion, helping differentiate between cancer and TB.
Importance of Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) Lab
During the event, Prof. C.M. Singh explained the importance of advanced PFT techniques, noting that diseases like asthma and COPD can be correctly diagnosed and treated through pulmonary function testing. He praised the efforts of the Dr. RMLIMS team for providing high-quality care to patients from Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Other distinguished experts, including Prof. Suryakant, Prof. Ved Prakash, Dr. Deepti Agarwal, and Dr. K.B. Gupta, shared their views on the latest advancements in pulmonary medicine. They all stressed the significance of such a unit, particularly in a leading institution like Dr. RMLIMS.
