Dengue Scare in Bengaluru: Keep Watch on Your Children’s Hydration Level, Docs Say
With the onset of the monsoon season in Bengaluru, the city is witnessing a surge in dengue cases, creating widespread concern among citizens. According to health experts, children are particularly vulnerable, and one of the key recommendations by doctors is to closely monitor their hydration levels.
Rising Dengue Cases in Bengaluru
As of September 2024, Bengaluru has recorded a significant rise in dengue cases, with over 1,200 confirmed infections, according to data from the Karnataka State Health Department. The heavy rains have led to stagnant water, a prime breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes, which are responsible for spreading dengue.
Importance of Hydration in Dengue Management
Doctors emphasize the importance of maintaining proper hydration, especially in children, as dehydration can complicate the recovery process in dengue. Dengue fever often leads to a loss of fluids through vomiting, high fever, and reduced appetite, making it critical for patients, particularly children, to drink plenty of fluids.
Dr. Rajesh Shenoy, a pediatrician at Manipal Hospital, said, “Children are more susceptible to dehydration during dengue. Maintaining adequate fluid intake is vital in avoiding complications like Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). Parents should ensure that children drink ORS, coconut water, and juices rich in electrolytes.”
Common Dengue Symptoms in Children
Parents are advised to keep an eye on the following symptoms in children:
- High fever lasting more than 2-3 days
- Severe headache
- Muscle and joint pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Rashes on the skin
- Fatigue and weakness
If any of these symptoms persist, immediate medical consultation is recommended.
Preventive Measures to Avoid Dengue
In addition to keeping children hydrated, doctors suggest taking steps to prevent mosquito bites:
- Use mosquito repellents on exposed skin.
- Dress children in full-sleeved clothing.
- Ensure there is no stagnant water around your home.
- Install mosquito nets or screens on windows.
- Clean and cover water storage containers.
Government Initiatives and Public Awareness
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has intensified its anti-dengue campaign by fogging mosquito-prone areas and running awareness programs. The Karnataka Health Department is also issuing public health advisories and distributing free ORS packets in schools and clinics.
Expert Advice for Parents
Health experts advise parents to monitor not just the hydration levels but also the overall health of their children. Dr. Anita Kumar, a senior physician at Fortis Hospital, said, “Early detection of dengue and proper fluid management can drastically reduce the chances of severe complications. Parents must remain vigilant and not ignore early symptoms.”
